Heritage ASL black/white logo

The logo above features the word “Heritage” in American Sign Language (ASL), symbolizing the passing down of Deaf culture and history through the generations.

The sign for “heritage” often uses both hands in an “clasped hand” handshape starting near the shoulders or the sides of the head. The hands then move downward or slightly outward in a flowing motion, representing the passing down of knowledge or traditions through time. The movement can vary slightly, but it typically reflects the idea of something being passed down or inherited.

The letter “H” stands for “Heritage ASL,” reflecting our commitment to preserving these values. This logo was designed by Nanette J. Comella Bernella of Nanette’s Creations, a Deaf-owned woman-owned business.

You may have noticed some changes happening recently—and you’re right! We’re excited to announce that what began as an LLC has now officially transformed into a nonprofit organization under the same name. The newly established Board is proud to introduce Heritage ASL as a nonprofit organization.

Our mission and vision have been carefully crafted to guide us toward our goals, making Heritage ASL a unique nonprofit in its field. You can learn more about these on our “About” page.

One of our Board members, Kathleen L. Brockway, an independent researcher, saw a critical need for funding to support research and documentation of Deaf culture and history by visiting key locations. Please check some of her work through the links and her background. As an independent researcher not affiliated with a school, securing funding can be challenging. Donations are difficult to obtain without the official recognition of 501(c)(3) status. And that’s how this nonprofit was born!

But this isn’t just about supporting individuals like Kathleen. As we grow, our funds will be used to sponsor a variety of projects that align with our mission. These could include independent research initiatives, school projects, and more. Though we’re still in the early stages, we’re eager to grow and eventually sponsor several projects that meet our organization’s criteria along with our mission and vision.

We hope for your continued support, as together, we can make a meaningful impact in preserving Deaf culture and history.

Stay tuned for what’s next—we’re thrilled for what’s to come!
