What is Heritage ASL?

Heritage American Sign Language (ASL) refers to the use of American Sign Language within families where one or more members are deaf. This can result in the transmission of ASL from generation to generation within a family, creating a heritage of sign language use. Heritage ASL users often have a strong connection to the language and may have learned it as their first language within their family environment. Just as spoken languages can be passed down through generations within a family, ASL can also be a vital part of the cultural and linguistic heritage of deaf individuals and their families.
